Sleep and CBD

In a 2013 study in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, scientists found that mice given smaller amounts of CBD became more active, but higher doses did make the mice drowsy. The cause of chronic fatigue syndrome is unknown, although there are many theories — ranging from viral infections to psychological stress. Some experts believe chronic fatigue syndrome might be triggered by a combination of factors.

Can CBD be used to treat chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)? That question is a bit more difficult to answer.
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS or ME/CFS) is an extremely difficult illness to treat. It features dozens of symptoms believed to stem from the dysregulation of multiple systems throughout the body. That’s a hyper-sensitive central nervous system and a major feature of ME/CFS and other central sensitivity syndromes such as fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, and migraine.
CBD is believed to help with your body’s homeostasis, which is keeping things like temperature, respiration, and blood flow in proper balance. Homeostasis tends to be out of balance in ME/CFS.
While it’s less well documented in ME/CFS, fibromyalgia involves something called endocannabinoid deficiency. That’s a problem with your body’s system for dealing with its naturally produced endocannabinoids as well as cannabis products that you may take in. That makes cannabis products a promising treatment.
A 2016 review published in Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research found evidence that CBD is effective in treating migraine and irritable bowel syndrome, which are related to ME/CFS. It also stated that some cannabis-based treatments appeared effective for fibromyalgia. The authors stated that CBD is often preferable to patients because it doesn’t include the high and other effects of THC.
In review, depending on your sleep disorder, CBD may help you. If you suffer from insomnia, depending upon the cause, CBD may be a good solution for you. If you suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), I would continue to monitor the research and talk with my doctor about CBD.
